I use my actual YaBB 1.3.1 for nearly 6 years now. Never had any problems with bots or spammers (and it's a well-known forum, we even are on top of Google search results if you search for "silent hill forum"). But my YaBB is highly modded. There are 150 mods installed, plus many own code changes/improvements.

We also have a captcha, but I can't tell if it really blocks bots. The thing which blocks bots on my forum is simply the register form which can't be filled out completely by bots as they don't understand what to put in there.

Also "The Guardian" is a must-have on YaBB 1. It's integrated in YaBB 2, but not in YaBB 1 - there it must be installed as mod.

And the question, if a 1.1 mod will work on 1.4 can be answerd with "perhaps". It depends on what code the mod tries to change.
