One more thing is , avoid creat one more user related file. ie. username.ignorelist , username.buddylist , username.bookmakrk........

better to put datas in "username.dat"
creat one more line in this file ie. line 22

Actually the exact opposite of this is true. If you can use a new file efficienly, it is always better to do so. Otherwise any other mod that modifies username.dat will need to be compatible with the other mods that do, too, and combinations of those mods. So if 3 mods modify that file, you already need 9 patches for each mod to make them compatible with each other and also be able to do a clean install. It's absurd.

Mod writers may also find they want to make one extra file, such as username.db (DaveB) and put all their mods' information there. That way, they only create on new file for different mods of their's to put information into (that pertains to the username, in this case). Small patches to keep just this one mod writers mods compatible with each other will have to be released, but he is making patches to keep his own mods working together, not his mods with other peoples mods, so it's still easier. And the mod writer always know what the data structure of that file will be. So, that's my little schpeel on that. Wink  Im still working on the tutorial, never fear. =)

I think this post from you Dave should go in here too:

Whenever you make a mod, please dont forget to have it delete userfiles, boardfiles, catfiles, etc that pertain to your mod when a user, board, or category gets deleted. Very, very important for keeping boards from getting cluttered with unused files and for any possible security leaks those files could possibly cause.

Another thing:

You are not allowed to modify other's mods and then release them as yours. First of all, you have to ask the original author. Second, don't remove his name from the author bar! You can add your name, seperated by comma. Also please leave the original author's homepage in. You can add your one in the mod description. If the original author doesn't allow you to release a new version of his mod, you can release an addon or you have to rewrite the mod completely - don't steal his code!

I hope this prevents further problems...

Modifying other's mods...

??? This leads me to question: What about fixes? For example, I was trying to install Birthday Mod 3.0, only to find that it had several errors in it that prevented a quick, easy installation. I corrected those errors and fixed up a couple other things... Is it permissible to re-release the mod as such? I have kept the author's name, homepage, e-mail, and etcetera intact, only adding "Fixed by michael" and the address of my homepage...

did you told the mod author about the bugs? I guess he wouldn't have anything against it when someone does the job for him...

Actually, after I made my post, I just that there was a thread running about Birthday Mod already. The author put out a fix, but the fix has some installation bugs of its own, and he doesn't seem to have fixed the installation bugs in the original file... I posted to the thread, however, and I'll see what he says...

Most of the time you should just notify the mod author of the bugs and let him fix and release it. He will usually cite you for finding the bug, but you shouldnt be looking just to get your name and a link to your homepage out. Remember, this is about helping people, not having your name appear as often as possible. Wink

I know, I'm just a glut for attention. Grin

But if you'll see, that last post of mine was on October the 22nd, the first day I registered for (and began looking at) these boards. I hadn't realized that the mod I was concerned with was actively being developed, I had thought it had been sitting stagnant like that for a while and the author was just finally putting out a quick little (buggy) fix. I was wrong, of course, and DemonSlayer is hard at work on the kick-ass new version of Birthday Mod. :lickin:
