QUIZ MOD 2.5 Beta 0.7.3

This is the Quiz mod, originally by Phyron, later updated by Whisper68. Carsten ported it to 2.1 and added much functionality.

It allows your members to create multiple choice quizzes, then release them for other members to take the quizzes. it keeps a high score list, allows for the use of a timer, and has some pretty good coding built in to make it much harder to cheat. (Thanks, Carsten!)

Mod History

10/18/2010 -- Mod updated to use user settings for language, rather than default. A couple of admin options added for controlling question lengths, layout changes to better match current YaBB standards. (Thanks again, Carsten!)

10/13/2010 -- Updated to version 2.5

This update involved changing a single graphic file name in Quiz.pl to show the new media.gif rather than the old flash.gif to match with the graphics now in use for YaBB. Other than that, this mod has stayed the same.

04/21/2009 -- Updated to version 2.4

It has been requested that I add the ability to turn this off in the admin center. If any more knowledgeable mod writer wants to give me a couple of clues as to how to do it, I will be glad to do so. This mod is accessed through it's tab or menu button, so I imagine they would need to be hidden to turn it off.

01/24/2009 -- No version change. Minor updates to Quiz.pl to prevent duplicate breadcrumb issue ... thanks to Derek Barnstorm for the corrections! Just upload new Quiz.pl file, no need to uninstall and reinstall the mod itself.

01/17/2009 -- No version change. Added a YaMMS compatible mod file for those who are adding this mod after YaMMS. Otherwise no changes.

01/04/09 -- beta 0.5, this would have worked with 2.3.1 without any updates, but I made a couple of minor corrections that wouldn't affect operating, and added in Carsten's easy tab update method. And minor correction to that file now in zip package.

12/07/08 -- beta 0.2, added Jet Li's language files to main zip and corrected small layout issue.

11/??/08 -- beta 0.1, updated to run with YaBB 2.3, no other changes.

I updated it to 2.3, and added no functionality. It was just tweaked to be able to install. All credit goes to earlier mod creators. Thanks to Jet Li for info on how to add it to the tabs for 2.3 style templates.

It has worked on two 2.3 forums for me, and has been tested by a couple of others. It seems to work decently.

For a demo, visit my science fiction board. You can find it in the link in my signature. (You can see some of the mod as a guest, but to take quizzes or create one, you will have to register for an account.)

If people run into problems, I will do my best to figure out how to fix them, but I am not a coder and do not know how to program perl, so I will not be adding any new features.

If anybody wants new features, the only way they will come to be is if somebody else takes up the ball and codes them.

Personally, I would love to see the ability to do a couple other kinds of questions ... fill in the blank, and word scramble. I wouldn't think either would be terribly difficult, but I don't know how to do it myself.

Try it out, see if you like it, and report any problems! If corrections are needed, I may add in some tweaks which don't affect performance, but match it more closely to current YaBB coding styles. As far as I can tell, this works fine, right now.

Hi
thnx for update this mod. Before I install this mod on other 10 forums, report some issue.

  • Language not load from user, but from Forum default Language
  • Quiz.pl line 1336 still flash.gif
  • Still old YaBBC Post Layout
  • Suggest quiz.lng to Quiz.lng and &LoadLanguage('quiz'); to &LoadLanguage('Quiz');

greetings
Jeff

Hi, Jeff,

Thanks for taking a look at this. Some of these, after having them brought to my attention, I have taken care of. Some I just don't know enough to take care of. Remember, I don't know perl, I've learned just enough in working with YaBB to keep this thing working for the last few versions, through minor changes to have it still fit.

I'm guessing the language files have gone from being randomly capitalized and not, to almost all being capitalized, and I have no problem with doing that.

I did miss the second place where the old flash.gif was being used ... have now updated that.

The language loading from default Language instead of user, I have no idea how to fix. I'd be glad to fix it, but someone would have to tell me how. (I'm guessing this means that things should read a user setting as to the language to use, rather than a generic forum setting.)

On using an old post layout, please do not take offense ... I am only asking for information purposes ... is this just a slightly different look which doesn't make much impact? Or does it actually make a fair bit of difference to usability?

I will hold off for a few hours or a few days in posting the new version, until I can find out how to fix the default / user language issue.

Again, thank you for pointing these bits out.

Why? The 'defacto syntax' for file base names and extensions is lower case.

Have now uploaded the latest version, with the additional bits Jeff suggested. (Thanks, again, to Carsten.)

Have also included the last updates to the German and German_Du language files, though they may need to be updated again, due to the changes.

Hi Jeffrey, i've tried that with another mod, but it doesn't work .....

I don't know if there is an error in your thoughts. I make changes and know it works:

Code
Select All
$quiz_menu = "quizsettings|$mod_list{'quiz_set'}|$mod_list{'quiz_set1'}|";
push (@boardmod_mods, "$quiz_menu");

All right ... I'll wait to hear any response to ThM, then make these final updates to the mod.

We'll get this fully up to snuff with the current stuff, yet!  Grin

Edited:
Never mind ... just did hear. I'll start on the changes, now.
