Board Rules V0.6 for YaBB 2.5

Board Rules V0.6

Description:
-----------------
This Mod will allow you to add Board Rules at the top of the Message Index in your forum. The rules are configured in Admin Center - Edit Boards, so you can have different rules for each board. You don't even have to use it for rules, you could use it for news, announcements or whatever you care to use it for. You can use HTML in the description.

New in 0.5:
Users can now collapse/expand the rules for each board - when the Admin updates the rules, the rules will automatically be expanded again. *See credits.

Credits:
----------
*The new collapse/expand feature is all Carsten's code. In fact, he literally gave me a fully working Mod file. So, full credit and very many thanks go to him for this new feature.

I have credited Carsten as joint author in the mod file, but in reality, most of the code in this Mod is now actually his - so again, all credit and thanks goes to him for his code and knowledge.

I seem to recall testing this on past versions, and will soon get it tested on the newest version.

I did have one thought, looking at the layout design ... you want people to see the rules, but do they need to see them each and every time they visit the board?

Might this benefit from the same sort of collapse option (at least as an admin choosable option) as we've recently discussed for the showcase poll ... user can collapse it after the first time, until the admin changes it, then it comes back.

This could be really handy, especially for rule changes.

If the rules are always there, the user will probably ignore them after a while, and probably would not notice anything new added. But if the user hides it away, then it comes back because of a new rule or a rule change, they are much more likely to read it and realize it is new.

Just a thought.

Nice ideas Batchman, but as you know, Carsten is far smarter than I am. Wink

Anyway, I have asked if it is okay to use his code which he did for Showcase Poll and he has very nicely allowed me to use it, so if I can figure out how to adapt it for this Mod I should be able to at least add the Collapse/Expand feature - I'll take a look over the next couple of days and see what I can do.

I'm not too sure about it automatically expanding every time the rules are changed though, that sounds a bit tricky to me, but I will have a look.

I'll get back to you when I've had a better look at it...

Actually, I thought that was what Carsten's code already did, but thinking about it, there probably is a bit of a difference between switching to a different poll, and simply editing a piece of information but leaving it them same location.

I didn't think it through quite clearly enough.

Yeah, I think there would be quite a difference. The only thing I can think of doing off the top of my head is checking the rules value - but I haven't thought it through properly myself yet. I'll know more once I start playing about with it.

Oh bugger! Looks like my power supply for my Mac is packing up - Grrrr! Low on battery too! Angry

Edited:
Aha! A bit of good old duck tape sorted it - looks like the cat or dog decided to have a go at the lead. Sad

Ouch ... I've had to deal with those 'sirius' sort of bugs before. What is it with small animals and power cords?

Hehe - 'Sirius A' or 'Sirius B'? Cheesy

To be honest, they're not that small. One's a twelve (almost) year old Labrador and the other's a big fluffy male cat. I think it was more like the dog wrapping himself around it while he was sleeping (bless 'im!).

Well, Batchman...

With very, very many thanks to Carsten, there's now a new zip package attached to the first post - with both of the features that you requested.

Note, that I haven't done a single bit of this new code - Carsten very kindly sent me a fully working Mod with the new features, so all credit for the new code in this update go to him.

I keep saying it, but just to reiterate, many thanks to Carsten for his code, knowledge and help.

Smiley

There is a reason why, to me, the top mod writer from 2003 is also the top mod writer of ALL TIME ... and it isn't meant as any kind of negative to anyone else ... Carsten is just the best!
