Boardmod 2.55 on Linux
Mar 1st, 2006 at 2:16pm
Print Post
Hello All,

I am running Boardmod 2.55 on Kubuntu Linux, and I have run it successfully previously.

I went to install some updated mods onto my forum, but I cannot get the Boardmod executable to execute. I have checked the permissions for the file (777), but when I double-click on it in the GUI I am presented with the "what application would you like to use to open this file" type dialogue. If I try to run it from the command line, I get a "command not found" error message.

I have tried re-extracting the files from the archive, but that has not helped Sad

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give...

Daniel

I'm a little confused as to how you're doing this.

First of all, there is no such thing as an executable for Linux.

In order to run BoardMod on Linux, you need to run the "boardmod-run" file.  Is that the one you're trying to run, or are you simply double-clicking on the Boardmod file?

Currently using Y2.3 With no mods (though that will hopefully change, soon).

Curtiss,

Here are a couple of screenshots showing the folder of a fresh install of Boardmod:

And then showing the pop-up window when I hover over the Boardmod file:

The pop-up clearly shows that it is executable (not a Windows .exe file - I know the difference Wink ).

I don't have a "boardmod-run" file - where should it be?

Thanks for the help,

Daniel

Hmm.  You do seem to be missing the file.

Yes, BoardMod is an executable file (sorry - I kind of thought you were referring to an .exe file - it's something I deal with a lot on Linux forums).  However, in order for it to run properly, you will need to execute the boardmod-run file, which is a shell script.

I'm not quite sure why you would be missing that file.  Have you tried downloading the package again?

I have attached a screenshot of my BoardMod directory.  You will see that there is a boardmod-run file in there, which is the file that actually executes the BoardMod file.

Of course, I am running BM 2.5.3, but I'm 99% certain that that hasn't changed.

boardmod-run appears to be missing in 2.5.4+. On my 2.5.4, I can just run BoardMod through the commandline or my file browser.

Try cd'ing there, and running "./BoardMod".

AK108,

Thanks Grin

Using "./BoardMod" worked (I only typed "BoardMod" in last time), but double-clicking the icon still doesn't work  ???

That'll do for now...

Thanks again

Try making a shell script with just that command.

Since version 2.5.4 BoardMod no longer needs the startup script, it should run "out of the box". Note this entry in the changelog:

Quote:
- Linux version no longer needs the boardmod-run start-script, it's looks for libborqt-6.9-qt2.3.so in ./lib

I didn't try Kubuntu yet, but it usually should work by clicking on the executable.
The reason why it sais "command not found" when you try to run it from command line is because you propably forgot to add the "./" in front. In Linux you always have to append that if you want to execute a file in the current directory. Otherwise the system will only look in your /usr/bin and your /usr/local/bin folders for the executable.

I'm not sure why it doesn't work when you directly click on the icon. But you can try to add a desktop icon for boardmod. Todo that right-click on your desktop and choose "create new->link to application". Goto the application tab and click on "Browse..." and select the BoardMod executable. If it still doesn't work, try to set the "work path" to the boardmod directory.

I have the same problem here.

I'm running Mac OS X server (tiger)

Just can't get it to execute, tried v2.55 and 2.53 no joy I get the message can't execute binary file when I try ./BoardMod

When I double click it it asks which application I should use to open it.

the linux executable won't run on MacOS. Right now this operation system is not supported by the development environment that I used for Boardmod. Check out http://www.boardmod.org/faq.php?lang=mac

I'd love to, but boardmod is written in delphi and uses its linux counterpart kylix on linux. So as long as kylix doesn't run on bsd, I don't see any easy way to release a bsd version. The best solution would be to rewrite boardmod in c++ and use qt to write a completely platform independend version. That way it would run on macosx too.

" command line only would be fine... "

was thinking more in line with a perl script to run on server itself...

no big deal...

I'll write one...

btw: would be good to have a "hit-number" attrib for search tag for multiple matches...

You may try the perl version here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=59325

it's old and was never really tested/used.
