Simple Manual Weather Mod V0.001

I've run out of modding skills and I am seeking help with this mod. If any modder has a bit of spare time, I would really appreciate a bit of help. (Please bere with me, I will explain how my simple mod works later on here. I had better explain my motives to you first.)

I've made a personal weather mod on my forum for the info center. You will see why I've tried re-inventing the wheel if you read my post when I tried to install the V3 Custom Weather Mod. Relying on a third party to give my site weather details wasn't working. So I decided to do it myself.

My little mod is working fine (and I hope it looks quite good too). I have a very good community spirit built up on my forum, (I have news editors, jobs editors, guide writers, newsletters and all manner of people willing to help) I might like to hand the weather  forecasting to a forum member.

At the moment, I am editing the language file everyday by hand to add the new weather information. What I would really like is a simple form to fill in online (more detail later) and have that info stored in a file in the variables folder, then automatically displayed in the board index.

How my mod works
I have uploaded a folder with all the weather images into called weathericons in my yabb images directory. The images are numbered 1-50. Also included is a top banner (I found this the easiest way to keep the spacing correct) called weather.gif and a small transparent spacer.gif to keep the images slightly apart.

I have added the following code to my boardindex.pl
Code
Select All
######################### my weather mod ###############################
$yymain .= qq~
 <tr>
        <td class="catbg" bgcolor="$color{'catbg'}" colspan="2"> <font size="2" class="catbg"><b>$txtwet{'0'}</b></font></td>
      </tr><tr>
        <td class="windowbg" bgcolor="$color{'windowbg'}" width="20" valign="middle" align="center"><img src="$imagesdir/glove.gif" border="0" alt=""></td>
        <td class="windowbg2" bgcolor="$color{'windowbg2'}"><font size=1>
        <table width="98%" cellpadding="3" align="center">
          <tr>
            <td valign="top" align="left"><font size=1><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'2'}"><BR><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><BR><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'3'}"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'4'}"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'5'}"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'6'}"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'7'}"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/spacer.gif"><img src="$imagesdir/weathericon/$txtwet{'8'}"><BR><BR>$txtwet{'1'}
            </font></td>
          </tr>
        </table>
        </font></td>
      </tr>~;

######################## end my weather #################################

I have added the following to my language file:
Code
Select All
###########My Weather Mod##########
$txtwet{'0'} = "UK Weather";
$txtwet{'1'} = "<b>Tomorrow's Forecast: </b>Rain in the NW will spread to much of Scotland/N Ireland by early/mid afternoon and then to N England/ far N Wales by or during the evening. Rest of England/Wales: dry and fine with variable cloud and sunny spells.";
$txtwet{'2'} = "weather.gif";
$txtwet{'3'} = "32.gif";
$txtwet{'4'} = "36.gif";
$txtwet{'5'} = "44.gif";
$txtwet{'6'} = "34.gif";
$txtwet{'7'} = "32.gif";
$txtwet{'8'} = "28.gif";
################### end my weather mod #########

I am changing the gif values and the text for the forecast daily and uploading the language file.

What I really would like is something like this:

So when I press enter, it stores this information in a file in the variables folder. I also then need the board index to interpret the data in that file and display it the same as it looks now.

If someone can rescue me here, as my modding skills have reached their limit. Maybe this might be a useful mod for others who want to manually enter weather (or any other) information to their board.

I don't want to decry the splendid work done on the custom weather mod, it works very well and I had no problems installing it. It's just that the company who supplies the weather information hasn't been updating the weather for the UK.

If you can help, and need to know any further details, just ask!

Actually this should be pretty simple.  Where do you want to add the weather info?

Hay, such a quick reply. Maybe a link for myself in the admin centre,but a stand alone page might be better if I'm going to pass the job over to someone else.

I'm still very new to modding, I guess that it wouldn't be too hard to make, but my skills at this stage won't stretch that far yet. But I'm a quick learner Grin Grin

I really appreciate your offer!

Would the person be a moderator?

If only one person is going to do it, I could give him the url of the page. But maybe if others want to download and use the mod, would the menu be the best option?

Do you want me to send you the images to play with?

EDIT: No, the person I have in mind isn't a moderator, just a member ???

Don't need the images.  I'm going to get the code together and your going to test it.

See there is where the problem arises.  We need to be able to control who adds the weather in the admin or gmod isn't going to do it.

It was easy... once Grin Grin

Maybe the moderator idea was best. I could make them up, all my moderators are trustworthy. Then maybe a link in the menu only visable by moderators and admin?

okay here is the first beat version (there will probably be more - lets just hope not).

I put it in a mod file just to keep things organized.  You'll want to add the code by hand.

to geto the weather editor it shouls look like this

www.yourpage.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?action=weather

Hope it works - I haven't tested anything.
